How to Become an Election Worker

If you are interested in serving as an election worker for future Haines Borough elections, please contact the Borough Clerk who functions as the Elections Supervisor for the Haines Borough. The Borough has two polling places, and each election official serving at a polling place must be a qualified voter and reside within the borough. Annual training is mandatory and includes the following, as required by HBC 11.40.010:

1. Ethics training;

2. Opening/closing duties of polling places;

3. Procedures for hand-counting ballots;

4. Operations of optical scan machines (when used);

5. Contents of the instructions to voters on ballots;

6. An understanding of the Charter and code references for elections; and

7. Any other items deemed necessary and/or appropriate by the clerk.

The training date for the Borough General Election will be scheduled for September (date TBD).  Election workers are appointed by the borough assembly as temporary employees and are paid an hourly wage.  Election officials will usually be appointed by assembly resolution in September.
