Hazard Mitigation Plan

According to the Federal Emergency Management Association website, Hazard Mitigation Planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters on a community.  The community works closely with state, tribal and local government to identify disaster risks common to their area.  This enables them to develop long-term strategies for protecting citizens and property during a disaster.

FEMA requires that each community update its Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) every five years.  A current, updated HMP is also a requirement for certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance offered by FEMA.

In Alaska, the State of Alaska bundles communities into groups to fund hazard mitigation planning on a 5 year rotational schedule. The Haines Borough began the process of updating the 2015 plan in 2021 and the final adopted plan was approved by FEMA in October 2022.
