Water/Sewer

Lily Lake

Haines serves about 800 residential, commercial, and industrial customers from three water sources, three treatment plants, 25 miles of underground distribution pipe, five water storage tanks, and 168 fire hydrants. and a staff of one a half time superintendent and one full time operator.  Our superintendent's time is split between water and wastewater.

In 2021 Haines produced 84 million gallons of potable water. Our crew has worked diligently to identify and repair distribution system leaks over the past three years.   Four years ago, our system produced over 106 million gallons. By finding and fixing leaks, we have reduced demand by 21 percent. These savings result in less electricity, chemicals, maintenance, and labor, meaning less cost and greater efficiency. Reducing wasted demand also conserves our limited water resources and delays the need to develop new sources for future development. We hope to continue finding and repairing leaks and reducing wasted water over the years ahead with a goal of a 50 percent reduction from 2018 levels.

We have three water sources, Lily Lake, Piedad Springs, and Well Field. We aim to minimize Well Field due to high operating costs and poor quality water, reduce Lily Lake because of moderate price and quality, and increase Piedad because of low cost and high-quality water. With planned improvements, Piedad will become our primary water source in the near future.

Lily Lake is 32 acres and has long been Haines's primary water source,  producing 46 million gallons, or 55 percent of Haines's water, in 2021. However, this amount was 67 percent in 2015, and we hope to continue reducing dependence on Lily Lake by increasing low-cost, high-quality Piedad Springs production.

Lily Lake Water Treatment Plant feed comes by 3.5 miles of raw water pipeline from Lily Lake. The treatment process consists of the addition of alum and polymers to form a floc to allow easy removal of particles. Three pressure filters remove floc and particulates from the water. The water treatment plant capacity is 500,000 gallons per day.
