Haines Community Safety & Training Center (Public Safety Building Replacement)
For over 10 years, the Haines Public Safety Building has been a high priority for change. Discussions over whether to upgrade the current building (which was built to be temporary) or replace it with a new building, have been ongoing. Three architects: MRV in Juneau, Johansson Architecture in Battle Ground, Washington, and Bettisworth North in Anchorage have reviewed the current building and submitted design ideas based on direction from the Borough Assembly. Replacement of the 40 year old Haines Public Safety Building is, by all accounts, the preferred route, since the current building is overcrowded, does not meet accessibility requirements, and its capacity for modern technology is limited. The Public Safety Building houses the Volunteer Fire Department, the Emergency Medical teams and ambulances, Dispatch, the Police Department, the Jail, the Facilities Department, Emergency Operations, the Borough computer server, the Morgue, the Assembly Chambers, and the Borough archives. The Borough has tried twice for Legislative appropriations for the building and twice for Community Block Grants for the building.
